4.5 Nonchemical Methods of Weed Control

Some nursery managers have developed a good nonchemical weed control program using mechanical equipment such as an in-row cultivator. This type of equipment is often used by shade tree growers. Be aware that a nonchemical program can cost more than 10 times as much as an integrated control program.

"Complementary planting" of grass between rows of nursery stock will prevent erosion and reduce weed infestations. Variations of this strategy include a mowed perennial grass between rows, a seeded annual winter cover crop (such as oats or rye), mowed local vegetation (weeds), and many other alternatives. Regardless of the type of vegetation between rows, our research has shown that the crop row must be weed-free during the growing season. Any vegetation encroaching on the nursery crops will reduce their growth.
